South Africa have become the first team to officially qualify for the Super 8 stages of the 2024 T20 World Cup following the washout between Sri Lanka and Nepal. The result has also considerably diminished Sri Lanka’s chances of progressing, putting them on the brink of elimination.

Weather was expected to play spoilsport at Lauderhill in Florida ahead of the game and eventually, not even a single delivery was bowled due to incessant rains. South Africa, who are topping the group with two wins in two games, have now gone through.

Sri Lanka’s chances were always bleak heading into this game after their loss against Bangladesh. Two losses in two games meant Sri Lanka had to win their remaining matches and hope for other results to go their way. The washout now has put them on ice, with just one point from three games. Their final group game is scheduled against the Netherlands on June 16.
