West Indies’ massive win over USA has opened up the group with many possibilities. As many as three teams are in strong contention for a semifinal spot. Here’s how things stand with the last round of matches to go.
South Africa
Despite remaining unbeaten throughout the tournament, South Africa could still face the axe if they lose to West Indies in the final Super 8 match. A win or a no result in that game should seal them a semifinal berth, irrespective of other results. Even if South Africa lose to West Indies in a Super Over, they could get knocked out if England beat USA by either ten runs or at least an over to spare (presuming side batting first score 160).
West Indies & England
Both have a win and a loss each going to their final game, but West Indies are better placed in terms of NRR while England have a relatively easier opponent in USA to face off. If both teams win, all three of South Africa, West Indies, and England will be tied on four points each. If England surpass South Africa’s NRR in the first of the two matches in the group, the match between South Africa and West Indies will be a straight shootout. If one team wins and the other loses their final game, the winner goes through to the semis and the loser gets eliminated. If both lose their respective games, all three of West Indies, England and USA will be tied on two points each and NRR comes to the picture.
USA
Co-hosts USA have braved their way to the Super 8 but found themselves short of pedigree against South Africa and, more so, against West Indies. They are mathematically alive but would need nothing short of a miracle to go though. For USA to make it, they need to beat England by 80 runs and then need a favour from South Africa, who need to get the better of West Indies by 67 runs (presuming side batting first score 160).
