Former India fast bowler David Johnson has passed away, aged 52.
“Deepest condolences to family and friends of our former Indian fast bowler David Johnson. His contributions to the game will always be remembered,” tweeted BCCI Secretary Jay Shah.
A medium-fast bowler, Johnson represented India in two Tests in 1996 after breaking through in the 1995-96 Ranji Trophy season in which he took 23 wickets from five games at an average of 22.86. It was a crucial hand in a tournament won by his Karnataka side.
Johnson made his international debut in Delhi in the one-off Test against Australia. Incidentally, he replaced his injured statemate Javagal Srinath in the XI. While he picked just one wicket – Michael Slater – in that Indian win, he was called up to the squad for the tour of South Africa, where he played the second and last game for India at Kingsmead, Durban.
Johnson had a more prolific first class career, taking a total of 125 wickets from 39 games at an average of 28.63. He also had one first-class century to his name.
