Afghanistan captain Rashid Khan has received an official reprimand and one demerit point for throwing his bat on the ground during the T20 World Cup match against Bangladesh. This is his first offence within a 24-month period.

Rashid was found in violation of Level 1 of the ICC Code of Conduct. He breached Article 2.9, which deals with ‘throwing a ball or any other cricket equipment at or near a player in an inappropriate or dangerous manner during an international match’.

The incident occurred in the final over of Afghanistan’s innings, when Rashid threw his bat on the ground in frustration after his batting partner, Karim Janat, declined a second run and the strike as a result.

The charge was levelled by on-field umpires Nitin Menon and Langton Rusere, third umpire Adrian Holdstock and fourth umpire Ahsan Raza. Rashid admitted to the offence and accepted the sanction proposed by match referee Richie Richardson, and so a formal hearing wasn’t required.
